Local ride

June 13th, 2010 · No Comments · Bike-related accessories, Minna riding

I was tempted to head over to Lasne today, but as I just wanted to “flame away” without paying too much attention to direction, I decided to go for a mixed ride. This meant some tarmac, some of the Overijse trails, and then some tarmac again.

I felt especially frustrated today, not being in top condition biking-wise. All this nice weather, and my body can’t cope with the desirable distances. Long gone seems those days when I did long-distance mountain biking. Well, who knows, maybe next summer I’ll be back to my old self?

Testing the new small ring on my bike, hoping that it would have put an end to my month-long hassle of low gears jumping, I exasperated when I heard the by now habitual sounds, and the subsequent release of support. What can I do??? If the bike shop can’t figure out what’s wrong with my bike, then who can?? Did it get damaged somewhere? Do I need a completely new bike? Terrible thought!

I stopped, unstraddled, and took a long look at my own bike. Normally I leave the scrutinizing for the bike shop. What else am I paying them dearly for?? Hang on … what’s THAT?? A limp shifting cable! Surely it shouldn’t be like that?? *blonde*

“Ok, here goes” I thought, and I started tampering with the ends of the cable. Turning the end by the shifters did not change much. But when I turned the end by the rear derailleur … HEL-LO!

As I got back up on the bike, 95% of my gear problems were gone. Shite, did I just have the small ring changed in vain?

Who cares! I was flying! And my legs felt strong. I had not noticed how I had grown accustomed to not pushing to my fullest, due to fears of the gears letting go (once or twice I almost killed myself when the chain jumped).

The weekends are far too short! I am sure you all agree!

Trails in Lasne, Belgium

May 22nd, 2010 · No Comments · Minna riding, Mountainbiking in Belgium

My web page is not entirely true. It was not only the first time I rode Lasne that I was touched til tears. It is EVERY time I ride here. And so also today.

Such a fantastic area! Close to bone dry trails, I enjoyed myself thoroughly in the some-25-degree-Celsius sun.

I am not sure that I will be able to ride on Monday, but if YOU can, go to the organized ride there! For more info, click here.

Hallerbos ride

April 12th, 2010 · No Comments · Minna riding

Last Friday I took up tai chi again, after a year’s break. The day after, to my surprise, my legs were incredibly sore. Do you really use muscles that different to biking? I did a spinning class a couple of weeks ago, and I was quite fine afterwards …

I decided for a casual ride yesterday, to ease up the tension in my legs that were still aching. Beautiful Hallerbos: in just some ten days it should be showing its full blue magic.

Trail in Roosendaal, Holland

March 30th, 2010 · No Comments · Minna riding, Mountainbiking in Holland

On my way home from having ridden the awesome Oostvoorne trail, I popped into Roosendaal, for a try-out of the trail there.

The www.mtbroutes.nl site had indicated that this was a beginner loop, and so it was. With very little tarmac riding, and only a few road crossings, I might consider this when riding with kids.

The only hesitation would be that some of the stretches are pretty long and uneventful. For a less strong rider they may feel … endless.

Guided tour in Aarschot area

March 28th, 2010 · No Comments · Minna riding, Mountainbiking in Belgium

Absolutely fantastic! I hooked up with a guided ride today, a ride I did the first time last year, and the amount of twisty singletrack is just … unbelievable. Could it get any better? What a great way to train yourself back to fitness!

We had the same starting point as the official trails of Aarschot. My question now is … are they anything like today’s ride?

Trail in Oostvoorne, Holland

March 27th, 2010 · No Comments · Minna riding, Mountainbiking in Holland

After having tried out a Holland trail (Spaarnwoude) the first time in September last year, and then having felt zapped backed to man-made trails in the US, I have to admit I had high expectations when I decided to try out the permanent trail in Oostvoorne.

My expectations were thoroughly met.

Only 12 km long, this trail is technical enough to feel longer for the uninitiated. I met singletrack in abundance; up and down, up and down, winding, never super steep, never super technical … but very enjoyable!

A trail I will gladly ride again!
